Question Catch Can, why are they necessary?

I had never heard of them until I owned my 1st Dodge. Now it seems to be an ever growing mantra; "install a catch can ASAP". In all my years of GM car ownership I've never even heard of these. So I'm wondering if this is a Chrysler thing or are GM & Ford owners the ones who don't have a clue collectively speaking. Any light that shed on this subjct & catch can history would be greatly appreciated. How long have they been around anyway?
BTW, I have one ready to go on my SRT8 just in case. I just need to be caught up to speed (schooled) about the why's & how's of catch can's.

Thanks in advance!
Doozle.
