Actually, on the street, most of the time a 440 Magnum will outrun a Hemi, simply because a Hemi won't stay tuned long enough to do anything. That's why Hemis were never that popular in the old days.

I would not hold my breath for the 6.4L. It is a whole new ballgame now w/ gas and CAFE standards looming. My guess is the 6.4 will be produced for crate motor applications, etc. They're just not going in that direction anymore (Viper gone, "hemi not the engine of the future" statements, etc.). Grab what you can now, I am.

As for the supercharger route i know of a black 08 that was just delivered to a dealer in georgia and went into service today to have a supercharger put on the car for the owner.

OK, Im not going to wait and possibly lose out. Im going Friday to order one.
Orange, every option except sunroof.
The Supercharger from the MoparSupercenter is a genuine Mopar product? And the Dodge dealer can install it?

It depends which 426 Hemi you are talking about. The solid lifter Hemis required constant maintenance to keep them in tune. When Dodge and Plymouth switched to hydralic lifters in 1970 it was easier to keep the engine running at peak performance.

The Hemis were also a very expensive option and carried a very high insurance premium.

Pre- or post-'70 didn't seem to matter much in the old days. Anyone I knew who had a Hemi (including two Challenger owners) practically lived under their hoods. Most of the time, the adjustments were carburetor related. Apparently, the vibration would screw up the settings deluxe. That's why I've always favored the 440 Magnum and was naturally wary when Dodge reintroduced the Hemi name. To me, it was NOT a name I'd have put on a new engine. Of course, I also wouldn't have tried calling what in effect was a 318 a Magnum, either.

Well if I knew for SURE I could order a 6.4 in 2010 I would wait and order one asap next spring. BUT with the way the oil situation is and if this country screws up and elects the obamalama the Challenger as well as the Mustang wont be around long and the 6.4 wont see the light of day. I could be wrong.
HOWEVER I bet that by this time next year I can get a superchip or hypertech programer to get at least 30-40 HP and maybe a couple other tweaks to get close to 500. IF not there is always the supercharger! I wont rest till every mustang I see pisses brake fluid in fear. [:@]

Not much differance at all but Obama and his side would be far quicker and more willing to legislate the muscle car into oblivion IMO.
