HOW CAN YOU TELL WHETHER THE MDS CYLINDER SHUTOFF SYSTEM IS WORKING??
I HAVE HAD MY NEW 2009 R/T WITH AN AUTOMATIC FOR TWO DAYS NOW. MY ENGINE IS THE 5.7 HEMI AND IT IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE THE CYLINDER SHUTOFF FEATURE. ("MDS SYSTEM")
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN TELL WHETHER THE SYSTEM IS ACTUALLY WORKING? IN 100 MILES OF DRIVING, I DO NOT FEEL ANYTHING DIFFERENT ABOUT THE ENGINE'S OPERATING CONDITION.
THE OWNER'S MANUAL INDICATES THAT THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A MESSAGE THAT SAYS: "FUEL SAVING" ON THE DRIVER INFORMATION SYSTEM ABOVE THE AVERAGE MPG DISPLAY. I HAVE YET TO SEE THIS FUEL SAVINGS MESSAGE APPEAR NO MATTER HOW I GENTLE I DRIVE THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAY.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN TELL IF THE MDS SYSTEM IS ACTUALLY WORKING????

I can't tell you how you can tell, but when I let off the gas after being at hiway speeds, it feels to me like there is a barely perceptible feeling that it is going back to eight cylinders. I don't think that it is a transmission deal but I'm not sure. I have never seen a display saying that it was in MDS mode. My first tank of fuel got 19 miles per gallon.
Now maybe someone can help me with the engineering here, weight of the vehicle, technology, hence the $90,000 price tag, but why does an SRT 10 Viper get the same "listed" mpg city and more mph highway then the SRT 8 Challenger? I'm sure a lot of that has to do with, as I said, that $90,000 price tag and the technology, but I want to make sure since I'm having a hard time with 10 cylinders and 8.4 liters getting better mileage then 8 cylinders and 6.1 liters.
Just for starters I would have to think of wieght and frontal area with less coefficient of drag. That big old V10 aint even going to be working when cruising at highway speeds.
I've got about 2000 miles on my SRT 8 Challenger, 1st tank, 16.5 (all city), 2nd 16.5 (all city) , 3rd 19.1 (mix), 4th 20.3 (trip) 5th 20.0 (mostly trip some city), 6th 17.6 (City)
And thats driving the car fairly hard, a couple of 140 mph blasts, burnouts at the Mopar Nats... I want my gas guzzler tax money back
