It depends on alot of things. But mostly how fast you ars going. Call the track alot of them don't make you even use one if you are under a given speed. Some even rent them for the day. If you are taking your Challenger then any will do, no special rateing needed till you go alot faster than you will be going.

the track I go to is the same as far as speed, anything faster than 13.9 , I use a regular D.O.T. motorcycle helmet and it's fine, doesn't even have to be full face or anything.

OK if you are looking to go to the track and play with the big boys more than a few times a year here you go. DOT means nothing at the track. It is a street rateing. A IHRA or NHRA approved track will be looking for helmets that are M2005 or SA2005 rated to be legal. This will pass tech till you go 9.99 or faster, but some how I don,t think that is your plan. Now if you want to come play with me at the track you will need alot better helmet.

QUESTION: Do the tracks generally have a place where you can open them up for more than just the 1/4 mile run?

to open one up in a non-drag racing track, youd need to find a closed circuit road course..

as for the helmets, snell rating 2005 and newer are current for NHRA and IHRA tracks, for hard top cars running 13.99 and faster. 11.49 and faster you need a cage.
