Would you buy this for you 16 year old?
My fist car was a Jeep Wrangler and i never damaged that.... unless you count having it berried to the door sills in mud... ok on second thought no 16 year olds should get anything larger then a 4 cylinder.

I managed to get through my first Truck (71 Ford F100) w/o damage. Well...mostly. There WAS one time I dropped it into gear at high RPM and the torque caused the fan to eat the fan shroud.
My Brother finally killed the truck with some help from my Mom. While I was in Korea I let him use it. He was working on the engine at one point. Had the carb and intake pulled off when he got grounded for something. My Mom wouldnt let him touch the truck for a month. Of course it rained and water got into places it shouldnt. When he couldnt fix it, she sold it for scrap to the nearest junkyard. I came home on leave and I saw my baby driving across town with someone else at the wheel. I was not happy.

Again I say drive an older Challenger with a 318 and build on that. The 318 is a respectable engine anyways and you would have fun with the kids working on it.

With Cherry Bomb exhausts and several months later when all of the fiber glass was blown out it sounded bad to the bone.
I had the competing exhaust called Orange Peelers but the same result.
With the loud noise, you will feel like a Road King.

When I was 16 and car shopping my parents WOULD NOT let me get a Mopar of any sort that I found. They were Ford and Chevy type people... had a bad feeling about the Mopars I guess. So the first Ford I came across that I was willing to pony up and buy was a go with them. 1974 Mercury Comet with 302 V8... cousin to the Maverick if you all remember. The car went like heck... would smoke the tires all day long. That is until the day I damaged it.
Rolled it endo on the freeway one day after Mt Saint Helens spewed ash all over the roads. Never knew how slippery wet silica ash could be until then. The car went to the wrecking yard where they pulled and sold the motor. Apparently the ash was tough on the motor too... I was told the motor was junk after the incident it was toasted from the ash and it smoked something fierce.
Well, here is my own personal experience...My parents got me for my first car, at 23 for graduating college, a ford excort station wagon...I drove it hard; as fast as a 4 cyl. could take, it would have been fine, but....ok, I am telling on myself, I kept checking the oil, and thought it looked good; well I asked my dad, after about 6 mos. "you know; I don't remember the oil being red." needless to say, my dad started laughing; then was pretty mad, and when he visited me, he marked all the essential parts for me with electric tape.....I think it might have been too late, about a year later she was diagnosed with a cracked head.....oooohhhh, I was a very bad first car owner!
Blessings to your decision...

I dunno about a 5.7 for a 16 year old but chargers are pretty safe cars which is probably their concern. I wouldn't buy my 16 year old a 70s car with no airbags.
