Stereo aux plug?

Stereo aux plug?
What is it for? Can I plug my ipod into it somehow or is it for something else? I looked through my giant manual but in the 50 pages of radio stuff i couldn't find an entry on the aux plug-in specificly. If I am blind and someone knows the page to look for it on or something I would be grateful.

Been down this road, you can plug in the Ipod, but be prepared to get a volume blast when you plug in the jack. I have been through 2 radios and now have to buy the ipod adapter plug for the back of the unit.
Dealership tells me it's only for mp3, or any audio source OTHER than Ipod.

I have my iphone attached almost every time I'm in the car.
There was a cable in the glove compartment that plugged into the plug in the arm rest. Plugged that into my phone, selected iPod and could control the whole thing. No volume issues or anything.
I wonder if it has to do with the device itself?

I plug my Ipod and portable XM radio into using a male to male aux plug, no issues so far.....
I plug my Ipod with the supplied cable into the jack in the console and all that does for me is charge it, am I doing something wrong? is it supposed to play through the radio thru that jack?
