Not to shabby! Some gears and a better 60' time would have you into the 12s. There's a guy on the rustang forums who posted high 12s with just an intake and tune. Everything else stock including tires.

Manuals are harder to drive in drag race.

Default If Look's could Kill

The Challenger R/T or SRT would win every race . I get so many thumb's up from everyone . No matter what they are driving . And I think the Mustang's look good also. I hope to get a better ET at the 1/8th mile track this coming weekend. If I could talk my wife into letting me use the tire's off her 300C this weekend it would help. I put Yokohama Advan S4 size 245/50 /18 on her car. Wider with great grip and shorter than my 20's. Good Year RSA . But wonder if it would screw up the ant lock brake's. Looking forward to a good day this Sat. with my Mopar Club at the track.

I've seen a few of those run like that locally. But they typically are driven by some kid probably 100 pounds lighter than my lard-butt and probaly have complete custom dyno tunes rather than a more off-the-shelf mail order tune. Custom tunes can really take the car to the limit whereas mail order tunes usually play it a little more safe and leave a little more power on the table.

Anyway, I've since added 4.10 gears to the Mustang but I have not been able to get any better times. Turns out that I now need to shift into 4th gear in order to avoid the rev limiter (6700) just before going across the finish line whereas before (with stock 3.55s) I could hold 3rd gear and avoid that last time-and-momentum-consuming up-shift. Could be I just need more practice with that gearing at the launch. I've only been to the track with the 4.10s a few times vs. more than a 20 on the 3.55s.

I can not wait until I can test the Challenger at the track.

For the record, an 05-09 Mustang could beat an 04 GTO (5.7L with 350 HP stock)(05 -06 GTO with 6.0L is more of a problem with 400 HP stock). I once raced one (04 model) when we both had just CAIs and tunes as our only mods and I could beat him to the line without much trouble. It comes down to more than just HP. There is the driver thing, ability to plant traction and then the actual engine tune, throttle mapping, stock gearing and rpm sweet-spot/rev-limiter limitations.

Leading to my conjecture that all of these cars are too close and could end up being a driver's race.

Default Talking about drivers

Back when I was young and had the 71 Challenger R/T 340 automatic. Several of us would get out around 11 pm on a road near my parents home . And race a marked off 1/8th mile. The 1/8th ended up at the drive way of a older couple. The old man and his wife loved to watch. They would get out in the yard with their lawn chair's . There was a guy who had more fast cars in his time than I could count . All brands . At the time he had a 67 Mustang fast back with 390 and 4 speed. He ran this young kid one night that had 69 Z 28. He beat the Z twice by a fender . Both had been worked on and had headers and other stuff. The guy with the Mustang ( Dale ) told the kid he'd run him for $50.00 and swap car's . The kid jumped on the deal. Dale won by two car lengths with the Z 28 over his Mustang. He had a way with the gear's.

Could be. I know a friend of mine ran a DA adjusted 13.3 with just a canned 91 tune from brenspeed and a Steeda intake. Stock car otherwise. That was his first time out. Not to bad I thought. Auto tranny though.

Have you thought about maybe trying a slightly taller tire? Not sure what you're running right now. Might just need either a bit more power or a taller tire to change things up enough that you aren't doing this right at the end of the line.

I honestly agree 100%. Especially when comparing an R/T to a GT. It's the R/T's race to lose but it's close enough that it could easily happen depending on driver mods. I honestly wouldn't have it any other way. Part of what makes things fun is when they are close!

Wink

I would agree that drivers race is the best way to call it. Especially on the street, where there's no tree, and not everyone is willing to flog the car to the full extent.

Everyone practice your launches....

Before the track opens in two weeks I have been getting around town a little bit... my stats at this point are at a 4 for 5 point. The first time I raced my car was against a two door Bentley on the highway... I never pulled in front but he never really pulled away from me. What a way to start huh? Since then I've been taken names and putting them behind me. My first win was against a newer Trans-am. I got a good hook up at the light and stayed half a car length plus ahead of him, the next race was a newer Camaro RS on the highway, cruising at 60mph on his 3 count we hammered it... 60-70 we were neck and neck... by 80 he was at my bumper. The next one was against my buddy and his old school trans-am ale Smokey and the Bandit. He had no chance... even smoked him in the doughnut contest (literally). On the way to the bar after I had just raced my buddy we came up on a mustang GT that had just got done racing some type of SUV (tough right?); so I pulled up and egged him on a bit cruising at about 40 we punched it and before I could look over he had already dropped back to my blind spot and then all he saw was bright red taillights of the Challey! We pulled up to a stop light next to eachother and he wouldn't even pull up close enough to see in my windows. The only ones I didn't get thumbs up from was the Bentley and the Mustang... they must have been related. This car gets so much respect from people sometimes my girlfriend gets jealous... I've had moms with kids in their car pull up and ask to take a picture of the car... sometimes it feels like I have a "Give a thumbs up if you love Jesus" bumper sticker on my car!

MoMopar,

From a roll, I'd put my money on the Challenger in a lot of cases. The R/T really scoots from a roll.

I toyed with two easy ones earlier this week. I had passed a Honda and a Scion I was just taking it easy cruising in to work. Then they thought they could pick up thier pace and hang with me, slowly they had cruised up behind me to about 70, I dropped it to 4th and was gone, triple digits came up fast. Never saw either of them again.

Talking

So there I was, if I WAS on a street it would be a stop light. I was putting around town, or the "track" as it were, a 07 to 08 mustang GT with exhaust and whatever pulls up, I am still in MDS mode from just being around town mind you, also known as the AT. The "light" turns green he goes for it, the MDS reacts by saying no, he jumps ahead by a car, my girl, she says, oh crap the pedal is on the floor I guess I am supposed to go, I hit 70 by 200 feet look to the side no 'stang, hmmm, 2 car lengths behind, either he let off or I caught him on the shift. Either way the mustang forum will read DUDE I SMOKED A CHALLENGER STR8 OFF THA LIIIINE! Yeah no poop sherlock, your car is lighter, still douched him on the top. Good times, better than sex, I was wondering how my little RT/ AT would do in a brawl, she did me proud!
(THIS WAS ON A CLOSED TRACK WITH PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS, NO WARRANTY VOIDING AT ALL) RT/AT CAI, no resonators, no tune

Default Mustang going the other direction

I was just cruising down the street in my Black R/T 6 speed. When Mustang going the other direction must have Reved his engine for all it could do meeting me . Hope that made him feel better. I have yet had one pull up to a light next to me going the same direction and do that. Normally they just smile , thumb's up and drive off slow.
