Personally, I dont street race any more. As I get older I fear getting caught more. I love going to the track and racing on street car night. I love it when a Mustang (except Germansheppards) make an effort to fly into the lanes to line up beside me. It usually don't go as they expect.
Im just a novice......lol now that I think about it your N/A Challenger is right there with those supercharged Mustangs I seen.

Default Enjoyed all the stories

I could tell you some stories of street racing in the 70's. Two acre yard full of fast car's waiting their turn . People with CB's on every side road for a mile or more to warn of traffic and police. 2 am in the morning . Super Stocker's , Bikes , even a econo rail . And of coarse street car's . And run what you brought. Those day's are long gone for me . Maybe a red light kick off for a short distance on our bypass 4 lane with no traffic ahead. I enjoy the sound and feel of my 6 speed R/T . And the rave about the look's from everyone . I guess age ( goingn on 61 now ) does effect what you do . But still enjoy hearing the stories . Just got done detailing and waxing my Black R/T to go to a cruise in at the local Sonic later this afternoon . Alot safer and less chance of getting a ticket .

As an ex-street racer from the 70s this was dejavue. I think we will hear more stories of R/Ts holding their own... as most mags have painted them as heavy slugs. Man I love this car. As far as mods I have the air raid intake and the deablo predator tuner. This race was by far the best launch and shift I have been able to preform. I wanted to post the results (even though I lost) to let the R/T guys know that we do put down some good #s and to not be intimidated by the results of the mags.
Ok, so you fooled him and let him believe your car was stock. Magazines typically only compare stock prepared (not saying factory ringers don't get used once in a while) so in stock form, the magazines are not that far off calling these cars heavy and slow compared to other late model Mustangs and Camaros, or if not slow at least not up to their expectation based on the power specs.

Adding a "tune" and an intake completely changes things. I've always felt the stock computer program in the Challenger really restricts its potential. It seems to really retard throttle response and, therefore, acceleration. That may be good for the average "Joe" in slipperey conditions but for us who really want to work the car, it sucks.

In real life and a stock R/T, we would only be able to expect to be so close to a stock earlier 5.7 GTO, not the '05 and '06 6.0L GTOs. At least that is my experience comparing my Mustang to those different GTOs and then comparing my Mustang to my R/T. Maybe I'll get a chance tonight in the R/T at the track for direct comparisons against some other cars to my R/T

Yeah I guess I did... but he said his car was stock also and the exhaust let me know it was not. He said that he had removed the cats and resonators and had not added. So in his world that was stock. I did outrun a GTO when I was stock, but I never had the chance to ask what if anything had been done to the car. With this run I had the info. Track times on the R/T vary widely from 13.4 to 14.4. Seems the driver has alot to do with the results with these new pony cars. I just read a test where the SRT-8 ran a 5.6 0-60... so there you have it. While others are showing sub 5s. As far as 5.7 GTOs we are too quick for them stock to stock. I have not had a close run with a 5.7 GTO... it was ugly for them. Good luck on the runs and let us know how it turns out.

I did get to the strip with my R/T but it was a horrible day/evening for racing...90+ degree heat with high humidity and terrible barometric pressure. The DA was near 3000. So my best run was a 14.6 which corrects to a 14.1 if you take into consideration the weather conditions. Everyone atthe track was complaining about their cars being "off" that evening.

Traction was also an issue. I've recorded 0 to 60 mph times on the car's in-dash 0 - 60 timer with a 5.06 as a "best run" on the street and I can usually average 5.5 seconds on the street. But that night at the track I was lucky to get down to a 6.6 second run 0 to 60 mph on the same in-dash timer.

My comments about the 5.7 GTO vs 5.7 R/T were based on my experiences with 5.7 GTOs against my 4.6 Mustang GT and, at least to me, my Mustang GT still seems quicker from a stand still that my R/T. I could just keep ahead of most 5.7 GTOs in my Mustang (both as stock to stock early on and later against 5.7 GTOs with similar mods to myself). In stock form, I managed a best of 13.6 in my Mustang. With my current mods to my Mustang, I'm down to 13.2 on street tires.

And, certainly, the R/Ts should surely benifit from a new tune and better breathing. I hate how choked the stock tune makes my R/T feel. But as I can only afford to continually upgrade one car, the R/T will remain stock for now.

Default Ex GTO owner

I am glad to see this reply. I just traded my 2006 GTO for a R/T and love it. The GTO was an automatic an the R/T is a 6 speed. Still old school but new feeling. Just wish it was about 500# lighter.

Default R/T vs GTO

I just traded my 06 GTO for a '10 R/T. I agree that the GTO is quicker and handled better. It was lighter and had more pickup than the R/T. What the R/T has though is style.... The big 20" wheels, the stripes and the 6 speed all ad to a character that the GTO did not have. When I traded the GTO, I really wrestled with the decision. I received a good trade in value for my GTO and was concerned abut the depretiation after Pontiac closes.
Anyway, I love the R/t. Can't stop driving it....

I know what you mean. I have over 20,000 miles (somebody stop me... stop me now) I just can't stay out of my car. I own 5 cars and my butt keeps going straight to the 09 R/T seat. This car is so awsome to drive. The folks just love it and I seem to be the only one around driving mine. I talk to other Challenger owners... but they only have a few thousand miles on theirs. Its rare for me to see another one on the road. I work nukes and the guards go crazy over the R/T. They say its eye candy. I think I feel a little uncomfortable with these statements. Thats my car they are talking about. But the people really seem to have a connection to this car and feel the need to express theirselves. I really feel like I'm heading out on an adventure everytime I leave in it. Like right now I need to go get a bottle of water at the store and I'm taking the Challenger... I know I know I have filtered water at the house... but the stores water is so much better. Even if it is 10 miles away.

Certanly is a better looker than the GTO. I loved the way the GTO handled but in chicago, there really are not a who lot of roads to test a cars handeling. Still love the looks of a GTO and may own another one before I am ready to kick the bucket.

Actually they lied about the weight, I am in the Army and had to weigh my car empty when I moved, with a 1/4 tank of gas I weighed in at 3400 lbs in my 09 R/T on an Army scale which is calibrated every 30 days
