If I was you . I'd find out what class that Caddy falls in as a stock class NHRA and your Challenger. It's not who is the fastest. But the best running for class. I blew a 1966 AA/S 427 Chevelle off the track class for class with my 71 Buick GS 455 in H/SA . His record was 11.85 to my 12.95 . He ran a 11.95 and slow reaction time . To my 13.00 and good reaction time. But what hurt was my passing him doing 70 mph driving my car on the interstate later with his car on a roll out flat bed . I once put all the race car's on their trailer with my stock Toyota Supra on ET night at a 1/8th mile track . Almost perfect lights with dead on dail in.

It sounds as if it is close enough to be a drivers race.....guess there is only one way to find out.

By the way...smart move taking the racing to the track!! I never....ever street race!! Plus you can't argue with actual time tickets.

Gee...if it weren't for street racing, I couldn't have afforded college. (Which is why I STILL favor the 440 Magnum over the "legendary" 426 Hemi. Has anyone else noticed that the "legendary" 426 Hemi was NOT "legendary" till shortly before Dodge reintroduced the Hemi name? Those engines were considered pieces of crap on the streets in the 1970s. Can you spell M-A-R-K-E-T-I-N-G?)

The HEMI was a race engine stuffed into street cars. The HEMI was at home in a race car (both circle track and drag racing). I will wholeheartedly agree that the 440 is a better choice in a street car. Better low end power. More reliable. But on the track, the HEMI had the advantage.

Very true ... on the track, the Hemis were better. But I was referring to their use on the streets. If you had a Hemi, you had to live under the hood to keep it in adjustment.

It wasn't that bad in 1971, when Plymouth/Dodge went with hydraulic lifters. A Hemi in tune would always beat a 440 in the 1/4 mile.

Yeah, a stock street HEMI was a great motor until it was time for a tune up. Expensive doesn't even begin to cover it. The biggest mistake you could make was start modifying it. Then it became a horrid mess of poor idling, transmission munching, ill mannered low rpm performance caos. The d4mn things only wanted to run at WOT. The Wedge motors were far more managable and made great torque without the huge cams and such. The guys who tried to run modified HEMIs, Ford Cammers and BOSS 429s (basically a Ford HEMI) usually were always pulled over on the side of the road with the hoods up. BUT, a well sorted race HEMI was good for 750+HP.

Never drove the 426 Hemi . But I had the emblem's . I purchased a new 71 R/T Challenger 340 . Only had one 340 emblem on the hood . The dealer tried to get the other one with no luck . Something about still in production. They offered me 383 emblem's . No way , I had enough Road Runner's wanting to run me already. So then I asked if could get Hemi emblem . And they got two for me . That sure got alot of attention. Had a new Chevelle 454 pulled up along side one day wanting to run me till he spotted those 426 emblem's and then shook his head NO . I had to raise the hood a few time to get out of some race's from some really bad fast machines that wanted to run. I did end up with a 340 with 11 to one piston's , balanced , polished and ported head's and bunch other go fast stuff . And blew alot of other car's off in the 1/4 mile . Even had a Cop stop me one night about 2 am when I stomped it . While he was parked up a ally watching for drunks. A long story . But ended up he wanted to see the engine . Which was all dress out also. He had a Mustang he wanted to run me with some time. I didn't get a ticket . He just told me to be carfull that a drunk might pull out in front of me going that fast . About 90 in a 35.
