Good!
Ford Mustang II anyone? An escort by any other name?

Ford’s Peter Horbury: "We have a car which I think is more suitable for the times than the Challenger and the Camaro."
In an environment in which a big car might be viewed as a gasoline hog, Ford Motor Co.'s intention to make the next-generation Ford Mustang look smaller may be politically correct.
"We have a car which I think is more suitable for the times than the Challenger and the Camaro," said Peter Horbury, Ford Motor's North American design director. "Especially the Challenger--it is a huge car when you see it on the road."
The restyled, re-engineered 2010 Mustang goes on sale early next year.
The 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 went on sale this spring.
Overall, the Challenger is 10.1 inches longer and 1.8 inches wider than the 2008 Mustang. The dimensions of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro have not been released, but the Camaro concept is 1.4 inches shorter and 5.7 inches wider than the 2008 Mustang.
Speaking of the 2010 Mustang, Horbury said the overall length and width are the same as those of the 2008 Mustang
"By cleverness in design, we've been able to make it look like the wheels are further out, further forward and further rearward," Horbury said during an interview at a Ford event last month in New York.
"The center line is the longest part" of the next Mustang, he said, "and the widest part of the car is the middle. From there on, you can tuck it in and bring the apparent size down."

Hello Ford...didnt you just redesign the Mustang to make it larger because of all of the complaints it was too small? Now lets redesign it to make it smaller again because people might complain its a gas hog because its too big? At this point you have to wonder why they cannot figure out why they are losing money? If you dont want a gas hog then dont buy the GT 500!

I would like a new Moose Tang that is much bigger and much more retro looking with more squarish contours and interesting details, like the old fastback Moose Tangs. It looks like it's too small and it doesn't look retro enough. It looks a little too much like other non-muscle sporty cars being made now. If they made it the way I want it, I'd have much more interest in it and I bet it'd be more popular too.

Uhhhhhh...excuse me, but in the pics we've seen of them side-by-side, the Mustang already LOOKS smaller than a Challenger, largely because it IS smaller! Why is this now a problem for Ford?

I don't mean to bite anyone's head off here but c'mon now. Doesn't look "retro-enough"? That's just silly talk! Dude, who do you think created "retro"? You are familiar with the Thunderbird and the Mustang I assume.
PS: You can call it all the funny little pet names you want, Big Money but I'd be kissing my Kawalski poster and thanking the Blue Oval Gods daily if I were you. Had it not been for the overwhelming success and popularity of the new S197 platform Mustang, the Challenger would still be 6 feet under. And I'm willing to bet your after dealer mark up that the Mustang will be around long after the Challenger vanishes (get it?) after the 2011 M.Y.

At first glance they do look pretty similar, but if you look more closely, the new Mustang has a much more curvy profile.
Curviness is fine for Porsches and chick cars, but a muscle car should be more flat paneled and have more squared off contours, be more edgy and threatening. Subtle details have a very big impact. Greatness is in the details.

Albeeno, you're my boy, but come on....not that it is anything that any company should aspire to (not being creative enough to muster interest on new designs like they did back in the day, but doing sequels and interpretations of headier times to garner sales---how's that for a run on tangent uh?), but.....Chrysler was probably one of the originators in this front....think about it....
Dodge Ram (homage to the power wagon of the 50's in the early 90's), to be followed by the Prowler and even though it's not chronological in order the ...sigh..... Viper was IMHO an homage to the ahem Ford Shelby Cobra.... so, embarrassingly , I would say Chrysler was the first to the nostalgia well for better or worse.
Does new style Mustang look retro enough, sure. It's retro enough. I like the use of monochrome to age it up as well. You trickster.
Does a company style it's car's to be PC make any sense? No. Not a bit.
If they are trying to make the Mustang closer to it's lighter origins that might make sense, but just to make it not look so gas hoggish, well that's disingenuous and if they verbalized it all this way, it's down right insulting to the people who are buying their cars. Kind of like "Hey, we know what your friends think of you, you know what your friends think of you, we're going to disguise your badness so that it doesn't look as bad and that way, you won't look as bad even though you are." That's kind of like saying more concisely "You're a piece of refuse, but we'll disguise you in one of our costumed products"..
I say they should make it a bit bigger and go Fastback style Mach 1 (or faster even). Again, as far as non Mopar muscle back in the day, that was one of the baddest looking jammies out.

Thanks Skip, I know that I always have you to put me in my place when I go a bit overboard. And ya know what? We're all much better for it.
To say that Chrysler started paying homage to previous model years' vehicles first, is probably accurate. I won't dispute that. But I think we all know who made the phrase "retro" a household name.
