I don't think exercising reasonable caution is exhibiting paranoia, Venthos. And, no, when I got the duplicate titles -- one as recently as 2005 -- I didn't even have to show my driver's license. In fact, one of the duplicates was for my dad's car -- I wasn't even listed on the title. All I had to do was provide the VIN and $15 and voila! A duplicate title was in my hands. Poor practice? Certainly. But that's what happened both times I had to get them. I actually had more trouble (at least as far as showing ID) a couple months ago when I was back in Iowa getting a copy of my birth certificate than I did getting the car titles.

Due to the number of cars here, I dont think it will be a problem. Now on teh GNX registry, 547 were only made and it would be a huge problem with clones over there

It would be hard to imagine someone using my VIN for another 2008 Challenger. |It would be EVEN harder to believe a DMV in any part of the country would just give you anything you asked for without ID.

Roswell..... If you can obtain a title from the DVM with my VIN, I will give you 5,000 for making me smarter. 8H300590

Until then, I will update as Budman requested. Nice site Venthos... Thanks for taking the time.

Im Soooo proud of my VIN..... I think I will make a small tag and place it right in front of the driver low in the window for the whole world to see..... WAIT, look's like Dodge thought of that!
As a matter of fact... If you take it from the window you have broken the law.

Yeah, Andre, I just made it all up. I'm out to destroy their web site by spreading false information. Give me a break, will you? Why would I lie about something like that? What possible reason would I have? I asked a legitimate question, then found an answer myself, reported it back to the forum then noted my personal experience regarding the issue. Frankly, I could care less if anyone wants to post their VIN information or their home addresses or Social Security numbers online. I merely raised an issue that apparently nobody else had even thought of, so now you call me a liar because I reported stuff you don't want to hear.

A VIN is not vital information. That's the point I'm trying to make, that there's a line between reasonable safety and paranoia.
Exactly. Complete VIN numbers for any vehicle out there are available all day long, by the millions. Get any that you want on ebay. Or go to any dealer site and search their new and used inventory. Thousands and thousands more on AutoTrader...

I am going to have to lean towards the side of safety and agree with what Roswell is saying. Roswell is not saying to not do the registery, he is simply stating a warning. There are a lot of shady people out there. I also believe in car regesteries. My convertible is on 2 different Challenger registeries. But they do take steps to be cautious. I think that all he is saying is to do the list but take some steps to be cautious.

But it's not an issue at all, anyone buying their brand new Challenger from a Dodge dealer would obviously have absolutely nothing to worry about in that regard. As I stated in my prior post, VIN's are readily available in unlimited numbers for any vehicle you want.

ResumeSpeed, if you don't think there's any problem with posting your VIN, feel free to do so. I don't care. jh27n0b understands what I'm saying. No, I have nothing against dodgechallengerregistry.com and it obviously has taken a lot of work by Budman and Venthos. I merely asked a question, because as I originally stated, I had no idea if car ID theft is a problem.

So here is more fuel for the fire...not that I think I will have this problem in Italy and with the new style key the Challenger uses it also may not be a problem for anyone...but food for thought!

Link:Car Thieves Using VIN Numbers to Obtain Duplicate Keys

Netlore Archive: Email flier warns automobile owners to cover the VIN # on their dashboard with tape to prevent car thieves from writing it down and using it to obtain duplicate keys from a dealership

Subject: Car theft

Just heard this on the news here locally. Apparently car thieves have yet again found a way around the system and steal your car or truck without any effort at all.

The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or truck, write down the VIN number from the label on the dash, go into the local dealership for that car brand and request a duplicate key for it from the VIN number. Car dealerships make up a duplicate key from the VIN number, collect payment from the 'customer' who's really a would-be car thief for making up the duplicate key -- the car thief goes back to your vehicle, inserts the key they've just gotten and off they drive with your car or truck.

They don't have to break in, don't have to damage the vehicle and draw no attention to themselves as all they have to do is to walk up to your car, insert the key and off they go to their chop shop with your vehicle!!! Can you believe it?

To avoid this from happening to you, simply put opaque tape (like a strip of electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN label located on the dash board. You can't remove the VIN number legally under most state laws, so cover it so that it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief. Anyway, feel free to forward this on before some other car thief steals another car or truck like this.

Unbelievable!

Comments: While there has been at least one well-publicized case (in 2002) of an auto theft ring using a ploy similar to the above to steal vehicles from used car lots, it is a complicated and time-consuming modus operandi and not the most likely way a thief might try to steal your car.

Still, the method can work, as proven in an experiment conducted by WTAE-TV News in Pittsburgh:

After getting permission from the owners, we jotted down VIN numbers from four different vehicles. Then, we went to four diffrerent car dealerships with a hidden camera. We told the same kind of story that a thief might tell: we locked the key in the car and needed a new one.
First, we went to a dealership and tried to get a key made for a 2003 Blazer. It couldn't have been any easier.

Next, we walked into another dealership with a phony story. Half an hour later, we had a key that got us into -- and away with -- the car. The key cost $2 and we paid cash. No one asked for identification.

Three out of the four car dealers struck duplicate keys with no questions asked, the reporters found, even though most dealerships have a policy of demanding identification before doing so. A different investigation conducted by the Sacramento Bee in 2003 found that car dealers were not only aware of the scam but in some cases believed they had actually foiled attempts to illegally obtain keys by insisting on proper documentation from the perpetrators.
Covering the dashboard VIN # is an option for vehicle owners concerned that they may be victimized in this manner, but, since some states prohibit it, checking local laws is advisable first.
