Switch the engines in those two cars and see what happens! The Mustang should win with that awesome 6 cylinder, right? You have to compare apples to apples!

my personal aspect of the whole nameplate rebirth of older cars has been high and low. the GTO is sickly fast (saw some at the track last night) BUT! if a car company brings back an old nameplate, shouldnt it resemble what it's trying to portrey? if dodge brings back the challenger, which i pray every night that they do, then it will be muscule car craze off the chain! i, myself hate fords, but they did sumthin right with the new look on the new mustang, sorry for anyone who disagrees! Depends on what you like. If retro is your thing then your won't like the GTO, just like you stated. The current GTO builds on where the old GTO left off. If you take a look at the styling of the 70-73 Goat and look at its modern day counterpart you'll see this, but many don't. (If it doesn't look like the 65 forget-it.) Yes the styling is a little blan but the cars a sleeper for sure. I'm not saying that I don't like retro, I like both modern and retro designs. The new Challenger looks better than the old one IMO, but the Stang does not. I hope DC builds it too! I wouldn't mine having one parked next to the GTO.
And as far as being scared, the only stock mustang that I've come across thats beatin me at the track was the 02-03 Cobra.

What I'm addressing is the fact that there are people out there that think a four banger can do what a V8 can, no matter what class were talking! I remember some of these people in Pro Stock, they finally came to the realization that a small block wasn't going to cut it anymore and went Big Block. Believe it or not, there are people out there that think one day they will get 7000 hp out of their 4 cylinder Honda!

but they dont NEED 7000hp...

did you know that the RWD outlaw class is lead by a guy named brent rau...he has a RWD 2ng gen eclipse, and with the stock bore and stroke 2.0L, he is running in the high 6s, around 200mph...which is a similar time to those turned in by the nhra pro stock cars.

thats 122.02 cubic inches, turning in the same times as 500 cubic inches in the pro stock hemi.

I totally agree. I have mentioned it before and I will say it again. Horsepower is just part of the equation and the other is weight for total performance.

Some of the cars in the RWD Outlaw class like the Eclipse weight around 2500 lbs. You put even a decent small engine and lighter car will perform.

I keep using Lotus as an example because they world renown for doing this and that is a high horsepower/lb. ratio designed into the car.

Power for the Lotus Elise comes from a Toyota-sourced 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Lotus fitted unique intake and exhaust components, as well as a reworked engine controller, to broaden the engine's power band and push peak horsepower to 190 at 7,800 rpm. Torque peaks at 138 lb-ft at 6,800 rpm.

Lotus claims a 0-to-60 time of just 4.9 seconds.

The car weights 1975 lbs. Are we starting to get the picture?

No we don't need 7000HP for a 4 cylinder engine.

That is why I would still continue to suggest a 3500 lb Challenger instead of 4100 lbs like in the Concept Car.

I like working on both sides of the equations..... a great engine with a lighter car.

The law of physics is not going to change.

Enough said.

I agree, the Elise with a weight of 1984lbs (off their web site) @ 190 HP has 10.44lbs per HP and my GTO 3745lbs @ 350HP has 10.7lbs per hp and the Challenger with its beer belly weight of 4100lbs @ 400HP has 10.25lbs per HP. Shave that down to 3500lbs and you've got the next fastest thing on the road next to the Vette @ 8.75lbs per HP.

one quick note..the challenger is "supposed to be" 4100 @ 425hp..which is 9.65 lbs per hp...but several shops have dyno'ed the 6.1L hemi to show over 450hp...i thought that someone, on an engine dyno, got like 460 out of it, but that is stripped down...no accessories...

You can only get so lite, sooner or later horse power comes into play! It won't be long before all the imports have 8+ cylinders available. It just makes me laugh that some think they will never need it!

the 2000 nissan skyline, in bone stock form with an inline 6 cylinder, makes almost as much horsepower to all four wheels as the mustang does with a V8...4.6L compared to a 2.6L...

the evolution 9 makes almost 300hp with a 2.0L...the new mustang GT also makes 300hp, with a 4.6L...

its not the japanese automakers fault that the american v8s are inefficient...
