RE: Priced out a Charger the way I want my Challenger
From looking at many dealer inventories on line (at www.dodge.com), I have noticed that most SRTs are loaded with Option Groups 1, 2, and 3. Also, some have the Super Bee Option, as well as sunroofs. This is how dealers make their profits. I expect that the same thing will happen with the Challenger.
A base 2007 Charger SRT sells for $35,920. Now tack on the following:
Option 1 (dual zone A/C, heated seats, etc)= $ 675
Option 2 (Kicker stereo)= $1,275
Option 3 (navigation system)= $2,335
Sunroof= $ 950
Super Bee= $1,900
TOTAL= $7,135 (17% ot the total cost)
MSRP with all of the above options= $43,055. Selling price (per edmunds.com)= $41,511.
The problem will be trying to find a dealer who will order you one without all of this garbage, or who will heavily discount these options. Unfortunately, this probably won't occur until 2009.

You guys are nuts if you think you are getting this car for less than 40k. I think we will be looking at 46k at bottom end.
For those of you who want to wait until there are more options, lower cost, other breeds, etc. that’s cool, I can dig that. That leaves a better chance for me to get my hands on one next spring.
But I might remind you of a known fact about the valuable muscle cars of the past. (and I promise this car WILL be a collector) In MOST cases, earlier models are more valuable than later models regardless of options. Hence, in 30 years, my stock no options 2008 dodge challenger will be worth more than your 2009 dodge challenger with options that you will probably or probably not pay more for than I do for mine.
Get the picture?
Just trying to help a guy out in making a good choice should he be looking SERIOUSLY at purchasing this collectors item.

Everyone may think I'm crazy but I've set aside $50K for this car and I will own the first generation of the new Challenger.

That isnt the least bit crazy.... you only live life once. you may as well have and do what makes YOU happy. if a fancy expencive car is your bag then thats what you should do with that 50k. whats crazy is when people do without only cause they let money control their lives. Go for it Paladin06....
Everyone thinks im nuts because Im saving for a downpayment on a fancy car instead of looking at buying my first home. The Challenger is more important to me. I have no wife, no kids, and no responsiblities.. and I make a damn good living, so they can ALL kiss my ass LOL.... that challenger is MINE as soon as it hits the dealerships.

Sounds like you are more interested in owning a car 30+ years from now than owning a house 30 years from now.
Just a simple philosophy that might help you. Be frugal while you are young (invest and save wisely) then when you
are older you can buy and own the nicer things. Spend wastefully when you are younger and you will struggle
to have money when you are older and even tougher trying to retire young.
Paladin06 is already retired probably twice (military) and so he can afford to to this.
I know many people who make 6 figures but are broke because they are in debt all the time.
You parent may not have taught you this and neither did mine, but I learned from very smart people early in my career and I have taught of my sons
those same philosophy.
A person in their 20's can be millionaires in their forties if they live frugally. Notice I did not say miserly.
If you really want the car in the first year, just find a dealership that won't try to rip you off. Maybe buy it in the 2nd half of the year.
I am just trying to help.
Best Wishes

RE: Priced out a Charger the way I want my Challenger
I agree with all of you. Each one of you has a valid point. I'm 48 and it seems to me the older I get, the more in a hurry I become. The clock is ticking if you know what I mean. If I have to spend the extra money to get in a Challenger early, then understand where I'm coming from. I don't have the time that I did as a young man. So forgive my impatience and induldge me if you will. I feel as though the sand in my hour glass is pouring itself away. I don't want to drive up the prices by being impatient, but I want to enjoy every minute I can in this car. Good luck to you guys and I hope your plan works out for you.
