Default New Anti-Theft Technology

Starting in 2009, GM will offer enhanced OnStar service in 20 of its models. If a car equipped with the new system is stolen, besides telling the police its whereabouts, it will actually stop the car dead in its tracks. According to the report, if the police see the car in motion and determine that it can be stopped safely, they can tell the OnStar operators to send a signal via a cell phone to slow it to a halt. Although, the horepower will be cut, the steering and brakes will still work. In addition, before all of this happens, the car's emergency flashers will go on and the car will give the thief a verbal warning before it stops moving.

The best thing about this technology is that GM is willing to sell it to other automakers in an effort to cut dangerous police chases.

It would be great if Chrysler would buy this to protect our Challengers!

Boy... the high speed persuit is a thing of the past and I for one am glad. Too many people get hurt and someone's car is always getting torn up. Bad guys your days of stealing from us are over and thanks to technology its getting better. But it does make you wonder what problems will arise from this new tech.[8D]

Actually this is old technlogy that has been out for about 10 years and only the rich could afford it, but I am glad that manufacturers are starting to offer it as standard equipment which will make it more affordable.

Of course, there is still the monthly charge.

Nice technology, the only problem is I'm concerned about what such a system could due if there are reliability problems. I don't know what it was that caused this but my father's 91 3.0L powered Dynasty had a problem of some sort that the dealership claimed that the computer thought someone was trying to steal the car and it refused to start and stay started. I'm concerned that this lead to the same problem if the technology gets a glitch. On top of this, it makes me uncomfortable knowing the government has this level of control on our cars.
