Default Vanishing Point

I ran across the immortal 1971 version about 3:30 this morning on cable (I work nights, so it's not really so odd that I'm watching TV at that hour). It was on one of the HD channels, and I was amazed at the quality of the print. It looked just as good as it did when the movie came out in the theaters. I wish now I would have thought to DVR it, so I'd have a hi-def copy on hand.

Every September on my way to the Reno Air Races, I pass through the town of Goldfield where they filmed Super Souls radio broadcasting station. They started to restore the building, which is an old Hotel...but it's still unfinished, and they may never finish it for that matter. The town is not rolling in money, but hopfully someday...maybe. Goldfield is one of the many "almost" ghost towns that dot the road throughout Nevada. It's fun to picture a white Challenger parked in front of the building, but according to an old Mopar Muscle article a few years back....most of the people there don't remember the movie! One thing for sure....it is a speed trap, so watch your speed if you ever travel there. (On the good side...they don't use bulldozers to catch speeders, just radar.)

Default Vanishing Point DVD

I purchased the 1971 Vanishing Point movie from Amazon.com. I only paid $6.99 for the DVD. It also comes in the more expensive Blue ray format. Very good quality. Here is the link:

Talking

I scored big this weekend when I found an original and never used set of “Vanishing Point” Lobby cards (still the shipping package) at my parents house. I had totally forgotten all about having ordered them, around 20 years ago….so it was like Christmas in August. Funny, but only two of the pictures include the Challenger, one launching over the river bed, and another of the car sitting at a gas station with a cop eye balling it from a distance. All the rest of the shots are of Barry Newman, in various scenes from the movie. If 20th Century Fox had known what a cult film it would become and how the Challenger would be the real star…..every shot would have included the Challenger!
I also have an original “Press Kit” that was sent to theaters that included an overview of the movies plot, stories about the actors and ads that the theater could supply to local newspapers. In addition, a friend of mine while in the Navy stopped in an old record shop in England while on leave from his ship and found a Vanishing Point sound track LP (this is the foreign version without the foldout center picture). The shop had two when he first stopped in, and a year later he returned and purchased the second LP. He sent me one of the LPs to add to my collection of movie posters from both movies, and my die-cast VP cars.
