I agree with a lot of what DamnSkippy says about embracing innovation. If you tuned a big (or even moderate sized) V6 as hard as say, the 2.0 liter I4 in a Lancer Evo (286hp out of 2 litres is 143 hp/liter. At that rate, a hypothetical 5.7 turbo would have north of 800hp), you could get some really outrageous performance. With that said, in the Challenger, as retro as it is, I would only want it with a large V8. If they came out with a different head design that made more power but couldn't rightly be called a hemi, I would be OK with it, but part of the reason for getting a car like the Challenger is for the sound and torque of a large V8. The future of performance (leaving alternate propulsion methods aside) is probably smaller displacement, forced induction engines, but the Challenger is not futuristic, it's retro. So in general a 400hp turbo six is a great engine, it just doesn't "fit" with the Challenger (for me anyway).

Don't get me wrong. Big CID is what I'm getting in mine. What I was saying, is that if you needed a high winder, then that wouldn't be that bad. And it may bring more in.

Offer both approaches producing similar performance and let the buyer decide what's important to him/her.

Kind of like the Hemi and Poor Man's Hemi in previous Chrysler Products. (Massive CFM to compensate for less compression in the form of the six pack) so figure some modern day equivalent and a more efficient combustion of all that extry (sic) fuel).

Let the consumer decide what's important to them. Always about choice. Again, with that said, my choice will be the Hemi.

I think if you go to that post which discusses the weight, with all of the safety issues, cars are just plain heaver than back in the day when they were less than 3500 lbs. Look at what they have to do to Corvettes with all of the expensive material just to get it lighter. Balsa wood floor boards.....say what?

The shorter platform certainly will help and I am looking to see what the new weight will be.

I have to agree with the pirate.... I bought an '05 Mustang and was probably the first in my town to have one. Sure there are a lot on the road now, but as yet there is no Challengers in the hands of the geneeral public. And it won't be until '09 that the Challenger becomes available to regular folks like me, and I will have been driving a great car for 4 years already. I'm also looking forward to what Chev releases as a Camaro. My first new car was a 1990 Chev Beretta and I still use it as a winter-mobile, so i'm kind of partial to the bow-tie. Regardless, if not for the '05 Mustang we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.

I have to respectfully disagree with your analysis. I am neither rich, nor in college and nobody is helping me pay for my `05 GT but me! Of course I'm just one person out of 160,411 other people who purchased a 2005 Ford Mustang (GT = 60,792 , V6 = 99,620). When I got mine in November 2005 the GTs weren't lasting on any dealer lots longer then 3-4 days before being sold. Hell, I even had to drive from Boston to Dayton, OH just to get the exact one I wanted.

One final thought - I wouldn't go trashing the Mustang either. If it weren't for the 2005-present model's success, the Challengers and Camaros of the world would still be resting comfortably six feet under while the Mustang galloped all over their grave.

I, for one, am anxiously awaiting the rebirth of the Challenger and Camaro. It's time for real American muscle to rule the streets again! If I can get my hands on some genuine MOPAR power at an affordable price, I will gladly trade in my GT. A wise man once said: "A change'll do ya good".

evryone has a friggin' mustang. i would not buy a mustang (unless it's a 60's-70's) if my life depended on it.

all the poor college kids with rich mommies and daddies get the 05 or newer mustangs.

I'm not dissing the looks but everyone has one.

To your point Jeremiah, I was thinking today of how they spin carbon fiber and other cutting edge textiles w/ resins to produce jet fuselages (that having to be enduring some serious stress), I wonder at what point the automotive industry is going start questioning its (or prioritizing probably more accurately) its production approaches....the one they're using right now is a refined version of something that has a lot of length in the tooth.

I wonder if they'll ever be able to cast body/frame components out of non traditional materials or spin threads onto molds like the fuselages....of course all in an effort to produce stiffer lighter frames for higher performance and enhanced safety. The downside I was thinking of was replacement parts and repairs for accidents.
