For the few people that are buying these first runs Challengers they are o.k. with getting there heads ripped off. They know what they are paying for. For the rest of you, wait it out, it could be awhile. The new Chrysler is not going to mass produce this car or any other car in the line up between the three brands. They have a plan to only build what the dealers order. That means for us (the dealer) we are no longer going to be stuck with old age new inventory and the market will not be flooded with too many of the same models.
Look at the 4 door Wrangler, supply and demand of that model means I can still get $2,000 over MSRP on everyone and they have been out for well over a year now. Every dealer in my market is doing the same thing. This is good for the customers because of trade values on those units. You get a higher trade value when it comes time to trade.
You complain about price, you complain about how much the dealer is giving you for your trade right? Go buy a dealership and make the decision on how to sell cars.
Decent explanation, I was at a dodge dealership willing to buy a SRT-10 RAM about a week ago, I have a fully loaded almost perfect condition 2002 F-150 XLT with the 5.4 Triton motor. The salesman had the balls to come infront of me and my wife and offer me 3 grand. This was not his "negotiating price" this is where he wanted to be firm. Don't even try to defend him or even make justice to him. He was a snake, and still a boy. No man would ever try to talk to another man like that.

I'm sorry, but it is people like him why you wont get respect.

By the way the truck was 26 thousand. I had around 13,000 to put down.

This was on Edmunds.com inside Line this morning:
"We have not said what we are going to build," said Kathy Graham, Dodge Challenger public relations specialist, disputing the 5,000 volume number that keeps popping up in the media and on blogs. "We haven't decided yet. It will be less than 10,000."

So, it appears that supply will increase, even on this so-called "limited edition" model. So, if supply increases, then the price will drop if demand remains constant.

Let's hope that they build more than the first number that was given out. If they do then great, the dealers will have to sell them for less and I hope that happens. I am with you, I want one too. But I know working for a Dodge store that I will have to pay a price to have one of the first ones' and I am not willing to pay over MSRP and I friggin work for a Dodge store.

Puthy, I am sorry there there is some little "Turd of a salesman" that tried to offer you some stupid amount of money for the Ford, his manager should be taken out and beaten to a pulp! Customer are not stupid, they know they are going to pay a profit on an SRT-10 but damn not that much!

Dodge shouldn't even say how many they plan to make. Once you put out a number it becomes a "limited edition" and dealers will use that line to jack up prices. Dodge only makes XXX amount per car, the more they sell the more they make. Dodge is better off with 20,000 happy customers who paid MSRP than 10,000 customers who felt gouged by their dealers.

Hey Guys I don't post much but read all posts and I have to say something about this discussion, I have been down that road in many Muscle cars I am 50 years old and have had many Muscle cars. I have worked for Dan Gurney and Carroll Shelby as a fabricator. Ive worked for dealers as a tech and a salesman so i know the business. With the big three coming in line with pony's the competition will be good and although I am a Mopar fan I will find a Pony car that will fit my budget, so I could get a Bemmer or something in that class ( my girl friend has a 335ci and its wicked ) for the money i would spend for a Pony car but not my taste. I think that if a car manufacture can sell the car they will build as many as they can in mere numbers there will be more profit in that than in limited numbers. So the hype is new now and eventually it will be more competitive so the price will be reasonable. I don't care if it will be a collector car because i probably wont be around when it does I just want to drive the Pony car and have a lot of fun with it. I have never paid MSRP and wont I usually buy over invoice ( I have a good friend who is a fleet mgr so i can buy that way). Yes right now its a dealer dream but wont be for long and they will sell for a better price. And with only 1 to 2 cars per dealer how much do they think it will cover their overhead. So for the dealer its the numbers that will be in their favor. Im sure that next year this time there will be a lot of Challengers on the lots and will sell for a fair price. That's my 2 cent on this.

Dealers are just the distribution channel Dodge uses to sell their cars (obviously)... That said, Dodge is in control of the ultimate price. They know how demand is shaping up; they're doing the markerting. And Dodge knows if demand is hot, and they release a limited supply, dealers will charge north of MSPR. Doing this takes advantage of the "hot" customers who want this car bad. The hot customers drive them around and show them off. Then Dodge releases the big quantities with options, and dealers start taking MSPR (or even less). And while the "common" RTs and SRTs are selling, maybe they release another Special Edition every so often...say a 6.4L or ? Keeps the model hot. Kinda like what Ford does with the Mustang. Just my opinion.

I agree with a lot of what you've said. The problem is most of these "hot customers" won't be doing Dodge any favors in the way of "free advertising" by driving them around. A lot of the owners of the "numbered limited edition - 2008 SRT8" will drive their Challengers only once in a while - when the weather is perfect, when the snobby neighbor is outside polishing his vintage vette, when he/she's going to the class reunion....BUT most of the time, the car will be garaged in anticipation of seeing the Barrett Jackson auction floor in 35-45 years. If they can afford the car over MSRP, they can afford to tuck it away as an investment.
I DO agree that Ford keeps interest in the Mustang with "special editions" - if you ask me, too many, too often. And I think you're right about the prices falling when production gets ramped up in the late summer of '08.

Marketing is "sales psychology", and Dodge is doing a pretty good job of it.....
leaked/spy photos of a concept appear,
the concept officially appears,
the company decides/announces at Daytona for the 400 their decision to bring it to production,
they taunt us with leaked assembly line pics,
they camoflage it with bras and stick it on the streets,
the concept continues to tour the auto show circuit,
the company website starts what is essentially a forum for admirers,
the mules are spotted more often and in more locations,
pre-production pics appear from a convention,
tidbits such as production numbers and standard equipment are leaked,
pricing information (and rhumored first year production number) is released,
pre-production pics are released,
pre-production orders are being accepted,
dealer brochures appear,
initial production number rhumors are denied,
second model year options are leaked, .......

They've been stringing us along for two years now, the whole thing has been carefully orchestrated - and it's worked! We're still here, we're still waiting - haven't bought one of the myriad of Mustang offerings available in the interim - holding our cash for the Challenger.

With the promise of 425 naturally aspirated horses under the hood of the SRT8, we're drooling just thinking about what more we can do with our Challengers to completely STOMP the Mustangs (needing a supercharger to get similar HP numbers) and Camaros (still not sure WHAT they're going to put under the hood - I think they WANT top billing in the HP wars, but seem to be sacrificing sales for bragging rights by bringing the Camaro out last of the Pony Cars). This further sets up sales of aftermarket parts for MOPAR (if it's still operational) or possibly companies that subcontract for Chrysler LLC (ie; Magna) to help bolster their sales and keep everyone happy / profitable.

The difference between Rare and Valuable is how desirable an item is. (Common sense is rare. ) Having the only Barry Manilow "Going Through Puberty" album [:'(]- although rare - wouldn't necessarily make it valuable....somebody would have to want it. The more interest in the album, the m

Yep you're right dodgesales, and when the Camaro becomes available those poor dealers on the brink of financial ruin will lower their profit expectations on the Challenger and then settle for MSRP. Yeah they'll probably lose their a$$es and have to let half their sales force go won't they? You said it yourself that MSRP has profit built into it for the dealers, anything above that is gouging no matter how you spin it. I myself can wait and not be one of the "exclusive" first owners who threw good money away. When I see '07 SRT8 Magnum and Charger one owners and executive drivers on the lots for $10-15k under sticker, to pay that above the sticker to be the first on your block is sheer stupidity. Yeah I know you're waiting on the next one to come walking through the door..... You must love your job.

BootCamp, your point is interesting...almost the Jump The Shark moment....once you have to start working up different gimmicks to generate interest.....I feel there's going to be a Pinky Tuscadero Edition coming to the Mustang
